I’ve done some biomechanical research on attentional focus and technical execution in elite soccer players. Long story short, focus cues will change how your players coordinate their movements–even for advanced players performing common techniques.
Who would like to learn more about the sciences of Gabriele Wulf. She has written a book on Attention and Motor Skill learning. The editions are available in both English and German.
Another good book that goes into detail on this Internal Vs External focus topic is called “The Language of Coaching” by Nick Winkelman. Interesting discussion, thanks for shining light on this aspect of coaching method. Metaphorical coaching seems to be the way forward as it helps in coaching externally. Thanks Raymond. The reference of external vs internal focus actually helped me answer some questions I had from the previous course regarding game insight.
Very useful.
Thanks
Adam
Thank you for this: * (Working with six year olds) There is absolute zero scientific proof that isolated exercises without opponent or internal focus on how I should move my Body to kick a ball better there is absolutly zero scientific proof that this is better than a real communication decision execution action context with an external focus
Could there be still some exercises without opponent that are good for learning? Imagine a six year old is taking a ball and is alone heading for a nearby Bolzplatz. The kid than imagines all the sorrounding and opponents, and is dribbling and shooting. How about this?
fantastic information and knowledge and big challenge to become a better coach and implement and work more on external focus approach with our players
thank you Raymond and team for making us better coaches
I was using internal focus with my teams, not knowing it was called internal focus. I always wondered if there was a better way. Then one day, I thought lets have some fun with words, players use to think I was hilarious when I say āimagine the ball floating in a pocket of air gliding like an eagleā when they take free kicks. Itās fun thinking out side the box.
Well ,Iām looking forward to implementing external focus with the players that I will be working with this year.
The book the Language of Coaching is an excellent read and Nick Winkleman the author digs deep into internal and external cues and references many academics including Wulf.
Absolutely brilliant. Reference thinking, football action theory, scientific research, application in the football environment. This is enough content to work on & with for an entire career Raymond. Thank you
The course has been brilliant so far but this months especially has been eye opening. The external focus over internal focus is something Iāve never heard before but it makes soooo much sense. Time to rethink all my ātechnicalā exercises!

Thank you Chinazo for the tip.
I just ordered my copy to deepen the subject of External vs internal focus.
Best regards,
Frank
Coach Raymond talked about Internal and External focus and mentioned the research done on this subject by Gabriele Wulf.
Last year I read a book by her called “Attention and Motor Skill Learning (2007)” that helped me to understand the subject better.
Thank You
Thank you for external focus. I’ve been doing wrong for 20 years, especially when it comes to shooting/finishing.
Thanks Raymond. The reference of external vs internal focus actually helped me answer some questions I had from the previous course regarding game insight.
Very useful.
Thanks
Adam
Thank you all for sharing the interesting books.
@Ladule Lako LoSarah: would love to read your research findings.
