50 objective coaching principles to accelerate your own coach development
Many books about football coaches are easy to read, but difficult to use. They are full of anecdotes, opinions, and personal stories, providing a glimpse behind the scenes. Interesting? Yes. Useful for improving your coaching? Not really. This is also true for Louis van Gaal, despite being the most successful coach in Dutch football history. Many books describe what he did. Few explain why it worked. This book is different. No storytelling. No mythology. No copying of one coach’s preferences or circumstances. Instead, it is based on more than 60 hours of structured conversations with Van Gaal between 2018 and 2026.
Step by step, case studies at Ajax, FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester United are described, compared, and theorised. Subjective elements are filtered out. What remains are the underlying coaching principles, independent of the individual coach. These principles are tested, challenged, and verified across different clubs, countries, and contexts, with the help of his former players, assistants, and staff. The result is not another biography, but a practical coaching framework. By translating experience into objective coaching principles, this book helps coaches to make better decisions in the complex, unpredictable, and time-pressured situations that define the football world. It offers not just insight into what and how Van Gaal coached. It also presents a deeper understanding of why these principles work, and how they can be applied by coaches working at all levels and parts of the world.
“It was interesting to see how someone explains in very simple words what I have been doing intuitively. When I read the final result, I can only conclude: I am these principles.”
“For me, this process has been a journey of recognition. I see my career, my choices, my vision translated into objective principles. That makes me proud.”
