Analysing Football Actions by Raymond Verheijen
Analysing football actions is the core business of a football coach. It is the starting point of the training process and the development of individual players. However, a coach is facing many obstacles during the analysis process. For example, if a player poorly controls the ball, most coaches immediately say that the player has poor technique because the only thing the coach can see from the outside is the technical execution of a player. In psychology, this is called ‘What You See Is All There Is’ (WYSIATI). However, the poor control of the ball could also have been the consequence of miscommunication or bad decision making but these components are difficult to judge from the outside. The only way to find out is by asking the player. Often, when two coaches analyse the performance of the same player they do not use identical references and terminology. How can these two coaches compare and discuss their analysis afterwards? Have they looked at the same aspects, but do they use different words? Or did they look at different aspects but use the same words? In this course, a coaching tool is introduced and explained to objectively reverse engineer football actions together with players. Based on an objective description of the football problem, coaches will learn to ask purposeful questions to players in the process of reverse engineering a football action from ‘executing decision’ via ‘decision making’ to ‘communicating’ between players. Thanks to this objective coaching tool, coaches will have a much bigger chance to get to the essence of a football problem and to explain the behaviour of their players.
Coaching Football Actions by Marcel Lucassen
On course day 2, coach Marcel Lucassen will practically apply the lessons learned on day 1. During the morning sessions, he will discuss the guidelines for both Game Insight Training and Football Technique Training. In the afternoon, he will first deliver the Game Insight/Football Technique Training before evaluating the session during the last block of the course day. Coaches will get the opportunity to ask questions about the practical application of Game Insight Training/Football Technique Training with their own players in their specific environment.
About Marcel Lucassen
Lucassen was the ‘Tactical and Technical Expert’ with the German Football Association (DFB) from 2008 until 2015 where he successfully implemented a Tactical Framework for all National Youth Teams. He was in particular responsible for the individual talent development within the national team playing style development. This concept was also implemented in the DFB coach education. With his analyses, Lucassen also assisted the German Senior National teams in their preparation for World Cups and Euros.
His years in Germany were followed by roles as the Al-Nasr FC Academy Director in Dubai and the Head of Coaching at Arsenal FC where he implemented his concept of ‘individual coaching within the team coaching’. After his successful period in London, Lucassen was appointed Director of Football Development at the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) and worked as the Technical Director at the UAE Football Association.
These days, Lucassen works as a consultant and coach educator for clubs and federations in international football. Together with Raymond Verheijen (FCE), Lucassen has further developed his concept of ‘individual coaching within the team coaching’, helping coaches to develop the game insight and football technique of their players.
